The story behind this tam is refreshingly pragmatic:
Chris Quade Couto wanted a tamborim with an extra high frame for his large hands and also because he holds the tam with only his thumb on the outside and all other fingers on the inner frame. This holding technique has become quite popular, but if the frame is not high enough, the finger tips will touch the head from the inside. From a technical point of view, this way to hold is is a matter of taste, as you can't turn the tamborim on its own axis. You will have to compensate with your wrist. This again many players find a lot easier, as less weight is put on the pinky as if you held the tam in your spread open hand.
Typical Contemporanea: thick-walled aluminium which features a saturated, full and present sound. Thicker sheet and a higher shell produce a somewhat fuller, not necessarily louder but more open, slightly lower tone. If you want more to the sound than just the regular 'pock' of a super high pitched tam, then this instrument will be able to give you what you are looking for.
On its lower side, the tamborim edge is curved to the inside providing more holding comfort and many tamborim players actually find this shape very enjoyable.

Chris Quade Couto is a musician and multi-percussionist from Cologne, Germany and has been playing with G.R.E.S. Unidos da Tijuca in the Grupo Especial of Rio's top league Samba for many years. CONTEMPORÂNEA in Brazil
This brand has a long tradition and good reputation in Brazil. Intensive contact to the musicians has always been an important part of their business strategy. They not only sell instruments, but mainly live their music. Every Saturday morning, many musicians meet up in CONTEMPORÂNEA´S music shop in the historic center of São Paulo. In a special back room, musicians of every age play Choro. The pagodeiros meet up in front of the shop for playing their sessions. Many of São Paulo´s smaller and larger Samba schools play CONTEMPORÂNEA instruments.
CONTEMPORÂNEA in Europe
Also in Europe CONTEMPORÂNEA is a popular brand which you sometimes even find in drum- and percussion shops that don´t have so much to do with Samba.
Instruments
CONTEMPORÂNEA has two lines: CONTEMPORÂNEA LIGHT and CONTEMPORÂNEA PRO.
The instruments of the LIGHT line are made of matt aluminium. Kept in a simple design and not being polished, the LIGHT line can be offered at a lower price and without suffering quality loss in terms of sound or durability. The robust PRO line is made of polished aluminium or wood.
Compared to other brands that also use aluminium for building instruments, CONTEMPORÂNEA instruments made from aluminium stand out by being built of thicker material which provides a massive sound to repinique, caixa and surdo, but therefore also a higher weight.
I was trying to buy a Thalita Santos tamborim in Brazil when I decided to try Chris'.
I am very pleased with my purchase.
The rim in this tam makes all the difference in terms of comfort and "pegada". It is wider than the standard but IF you have long hands it will suit you.
Apparently this tam is called tamborim Marmita for resembling the food box used by working class workers to take their lunch to work, sweet homage.
I'm a great admirer of Chris Quade Couto so was really excited when I found this at Kalango. Just wanted I need for my big hands. Thanks Contemporanea for creating this fine drum!
