BAHIA CONNECTION - WORKSHOPS IN SALVADOR 2018

A TRIP TO BRAZIL FOR SAMBA REGGAE FANS
includes workshops with the Bahia Connection from 14.01.-28.01 or 04.02. 2018, 2 to 3 weeks

This trip is being organised annually for 12 years now and is for everyone interested in Afto-Brasilian culture and music.
The trip includes accommodation in a hotel and 24 hour assistance - an absolutely unique experience with loads of precious contacts!
For the 4th time, workshops of the Bahia Connection will be part of this beautiful trip to Salvador da Bahia / Brazil.

What is the Bahia Connection?
The Bahia Connection is a merger of drummers who all play the rhythms of Bahia's Afro Blocos. The Connection is in France, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. We learn original rhythms from Bahia in order to be able to play them across several groups at different occasions. This is a video from our workshop finals in 2017: https://www.facebook.com/bahiaconnection/

Stars from the scene like Jair Rezende (Timbalada), Gerandinho frin Os Negões and Mestre Memeu (Olodum) will be showing you the latest groves and specialities of their blocos. If you happen to be in Salvador at that time, you are welcome to join us there for the workshops after signing up.

The organiser
The host is Volker Conrath from Berlin, musical director from http://www.blocoexplosao.de/ , founder of the Bahia Connection and coordinator of the Bahia programme at the infamous Samba Syndrom each autumn in Berlin.
A few words Volker wrote after his arriving in Salvador da Bahia:
"I have added almost 30 years of Brazil travels to my experience, since 2005 I offer an annual trip to Brazil for drummers.
If you would like to join us next year for this authentic and very musical journey with wonderful people and unique workshops, please feel free to get in touch! This time my journey will be part of a 2-3 week workshop experience with original mestres of famous bands. More than 35 drummers from Germany and France (Bahia Connection France) are part of it every year!

Salvador flourishes to be the focus of pre-carnival spectacles. Carnival time is summer time and many tourists are in town. All the blocos are prepping for the big moment with public rehearsals. There are masses of concerts and festivals with Reggae, Axé, Samba, Afro Jazz etc. Many of the rehearsals are out doors and for free. 80% of the interesting events take place in the old town at the Pelourinho place. You are sure to see loads of blocos rehearsing publicly in the streets. The Pelourinho has been declared World Heritage from the UNESCO in 1995. The historical town is quite small and everything is manageable by foot.

Workshop dates:  22.-27.01.2018
2 days each with Memeu Nunes from Olodum, Geraldinho from Os Negões and Jair Resende from Timbalada.

costs are 35€ per day / person for classes, rehearsal location and instrument rental.
Drummers who prefer to organise their own trip, can register previously and join the workshops upon arrival.

Programme of the trip:
14.-20.1. at the beach with drum programme
20.1.-29.1. in Salvador da Bahia, workshop with the Bahia Connection.
In the 3. week we will offer going to Rio together depending on the participants wishes.

★ There is no better kick for drummers who play these rhythms in Europe than seeing these groups play live. The biggest difference to European groups is probably that the blocos always do their presentations with lyrics and singers. Maybe this has inspired to come join us next year?
