Dia do Samba - Day of the Samba

Happy Samba Day to all sambistas around the world - celebrated each year on December 2nd!

Happy Samba Day to all sambistas around the world! Did you know that Brazilian Samba de Roda was included in the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO in 2005? And did you know that the idea of this day goes back to 1963?

What's the origin of Samba Day
Samba in Brazil is not just any music style. It is many peoples' life, the blood in their veins beats Samba, Samba is Rio's and Bahia's "registered trademark". It is precious and lovable, a huge part of the culture and so much more than just the Carnival. In 2005, Brazilian Samba de Roda, was included in the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. This Brazilian manifestation was the first musical genre in the country to receive this title.

The National Samba Day is not an official commemorative date but was approved as a municipal law in the State of Guanabara (now the city of Rio de Janeiro) already back in 1964.
Bahia also had drawn up a law draft in 1963, that intended to establish the Day of the Samba. Already considering its approval, the project stated that the commemorations of the date that year would honour Ary Barroso, Brazilian composer, author of "Aquarela do Brasil", among other songs.

This was possibly the reason why people started to spread the idea that the date would be celebrated as a tribute to all sambistas.
So, although the National Samba Day is not exactly an official bank holiday, it is celebrated all over Brazil and beyond its borders.

It is worth remembering that there are many different variations of Samba with other music styles like Samba Rock, Samba de Enredo, Samba Pagode, Samba Carnavalesco, Samba de Gafieira and others.
By the way - Rio de Janeiro also celebrates Pagode Day on May 18 since 1992.

And interesting to know - also part of the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage:
since 2014 the Roda de Capoeira and since 2019  the cultural complex of Bumba-meu-boi from Maranhão

Play Samba - Be Happy.
