The cavaquinho started its long journey around the world in Portugal. Not only because of its small size it was a perfect travel companion of many sailors and globetrotters. The cavaquinho travelled via Madeira, the Azores, the Cape Verde Islands allt the way to Brazil and also to Hawaii where it became the Ukelele. In Brazil it is mainly played in the Choro and Samba, either with a plectrum or just picked with the fingers. Whether used for solo parts or for accompanying vocals, the cavaquinho is an elementary and beautiful part of Brazilian music!
