Massive bass for your bateria!
Artcelsior is an original sugar loaf tradition brand from Rio - an instrument manufacturer with traditional background and a long history. The instruments are literally crafted, their rustical look and the way they are built without any industrial finish has kept its fans and for many years now it has managed to preserve its reputation. Artelsior surdos use the traditional put-through-system with its tension rods. The hoops are galvanised, the shell is made of polished aluminium. This is the surdo which is played in Rio´s Samba schools! The 60 cm shell produces a deep and voluminous sustain. Artcelsior uses beautiful goatskin heads on wooden hoops. The surdo comes with goadskin heads on both sides. Big bass for the corners!
Important information for mounting goat skin heads:
Natural skins are mounted on wood rims after previously being moistened. When the dry, the skins tighten up which often causes the wood rim to twist. So if you put on a new goatskin head, it will probably be neccessary to slightly wetten the head with a sponge or a cloth (don´t drown it, just make it damp a little bit!). Then the head will stretch and you can mount it without any problems. Put the head on your surdo without putting tension on it. Leave it to dry at room temperature overnight, don´t expose it to sun or other foreign influences. It will fit itself nicely on your surdo and be ready for being tuned and played!
Like this you will enjoy your goat skin for a long time!

ARTCELSIOR in Brazil
ARTCELSIOR is Rio´s most traditional company for building and creating new instruments. They changed their brand name several times (Excelsior and Lecsom, among others), nevertheless for the last decades they have been producing instruments for Rio´s samba schools. ARTCELSIOR´s people know exactly, how samba instruments are supposed to sound. They constantly receive feedback from the small to the large Rio samba schools. Together with the experience of thousands of sambistas, the drums have become as successful as they are today.
ARTCELSIOR drums are rustical, functional and sound great!
Tradition indeed commits!
For the Brazilian market, the drums are made of galvanized sheet metal as well as of polished aluminium sheet. Being specialised in metal processing, ARTCELSIOR also makes brass instruments such as saxophones, trumpets and trombones besides the percussion instruments.
ARTCELSIOR in Europe
ARTCELSIOR´s drums also were amongst the first drums available in Europe in the late 1980s. In those times they still used their brand called Lecsom and the small European Samba community played on the original drums from Rio de Janeiro. Even today and despite of having loads of competition, ARTCELSIOR still counts to many sambistas´favourite brand of instruments.
Instruments
ARTCELSIOR produces all kinds of instruments which are being played in the escolas de Samba, the Pagode and the Samba de Mesa. ARTCELSIOR cuicas still set the standard and enjoy cult status.
