Surdo 22" x 50 cm - goatskin heads

Beautiful Rio style Samba 22'' surdo by IVSOM - a very special design!
Ivsom´s surdos are very popular in Rio´s and meanwhile also in European Samba schools. They stand out from other brands especially through 3 characters:
1) They are only 50 cm high, so they are shorter than the standard. That saves weight, does not influence the sound and is a lot more comfortable in its handling. You will quite often see 50 cm surdos in Rio´s Samba schools!
2) The tension rods have threads on both ends, that means that where you'd usually just put the rod through a lug, with Ivsom instruments the rods are screwed down flush with the hoop. No more metal pieces sticking out!
3) To enforce the rims where the heads rest on the shell, the body is flanged around a ring of 10 mm flat metal. Like this the shell is a lot more stable than it would be using just a piece of round wire. But the more important fact is that the rim is now absolutely flat!
Optical features are the yellow galvanised hardware and exceptionally beautiful and hand-selected goatskin heads.

IVSOM delivers amongst others to the Samba school Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel in Rio de Janeiro. Being a mechanic and caixa player himself he has the best knowledge and skills to build very good Samba instruments.

Important information for mounting goat skin heads:
Natural skins are mounted on wood rims after previously being moistened. When the dry, the skins tighten up which often causes the wood rim to twist. So if you put on a new goatskin head, it will probably be neccessary to slightly wetten the head with a sponge or a cloth (don´t drown it, just make it damp a little bit!). Then the head will stretch and you can mount it without any problems. Put the head on your surdo without putting tension on it. Leave it to dry at room temperature overnight, don´t expose it to sun or other foreign influences. It will fit itself nicely on your surdo and be ready for being tuned and played!
Like this you will enjoy your goat skin for a long time!

Here’s how to mount an Ivsom surdo:

IVSOM in Brazil

IVSOM is a small producer of Samba instruments from Rio de Janeiro. The brand is a wordplay: Its owner´s name is Ivson, the Braziliain word for tune is 'som'. Before becoming self-employed, Ivson absolved a profound formation in the metalworking craft sector. Ivson has been an active sambista for many years. He plays caixa for Mocidade, his wife and business partner Luciana plays the chocalho. Therefore he is very close to his clients and knows exactly, what is in demand. Ivson actively participates in the production of his instruments and makes excellent-quality instruments in a very well organized workshop. Some of Rio´s major Samba schools play his instruments. Quite frecuently Ivson surprises us with new features and innovations. Due to his close contact to the Samba scene, he is often the first to convert buzzing ideas and or incitations into useful inspiration for making new instruments. The IVSOM 'vasado' caixas and repiniques created the trend of instruments without bodies.

IVSOM in Europe
IVSOM instruments have gained high recognition amongst Hardcore Rio Sambistas in Europe within the last couple of years. Especially their good workmanship and the excellent sound of the drums have attracted the percussionist´s attenention over here. The number of IVSOM fans is growing larger each year.

Percussion instrumens
IVSOM drums have a couple of untypical characteristics. For example, the tension rods are tightly screwed to the tension hoop. This link is very stable and absolutely free of rattling noises, but a bit more time-consuming in its montage. The surdos have a neat detail concerning the rims of the body where the head rests. The body´s wall is rimmed around a 10 mm flat bar. With this the corpus is a lot more stable than other bodies where wire is used for reinforcement. Like this the drums obtain a smooth and flat rim for ideal head fitting. IVSOM´s reference product is the rocar with 20 jingles.
