Ilu means drum in Yoruba. These drums are largely unknown outside of Pernambuco. They come from the Afro-Brazilian cult called Xangô. As in West Africa, in Bahia they are played in a set of three and are accompanied by agogó and agbé (shekeré). Skins on both sides give this instrument its extraordinary sound.
