22“ nylon head / single-layered surdo head by Contemporânea

The single-layered 22" standard nylon heads by Contemporânea are classic surdo heads with very responsive and high vibration behaviour, which clear and light sound spectrum can conveniently be used on both surdo sides (superior and/or resonance head). The thickness of your surdo head contributes significantly to the general sound characteristics of your instrument, therefore it is important to know what sound you like and are looking to achieve, and how your surdo shell reacts in combination with the head. 22" surdos play the bass lines in Samba styles, so if you are looking for a light but full sound with much sustain and overtones, a single-layered head is a good choice. Single-layered nylon heads are very responsive and intentionally overtone-based, if you feel you'd like a bit less, you can easily muffle the head with some tape; single-layered nylon heads are durable, weatherproof and can be used on both sides as batter or resonance head on a surdo - all good reasons why this type of head is so very popular. Single-layered nylon heads are the thinner standard version by Contemporânea and are very responsive with a clear, light sound and intentionally rich in overtones due to their vibrating stronger than thicker heads. You will notice that a while after putting on a new head on your surdo, the sound will change positively. A new head will usually sound a bit whiny in the beginning, it needs to find its 'groove' first. As soon as it gets used to the tension, the rim of the shell and to being played regularly, the sound will settle nicely. As usual - good things are worth waiting for. A thin nylon head is suitable for you if you like the clear and light sound and if you want a head with an easy response.

CONTEMPORÂNEA in Brazil

This brand has a long tradition and good reputation in Brazil. Intensive contact to the musicians has always been an important part of their business strategy. They not only sell instruments, but mainly live their music. Every Saturday morning, many musicians meet up in CONTEMPORÂNEA´S music shop in the historic center of São Paulo. In a special back room, musicians of every age play Choro. The pagodeiros meet up in front of the shop for playing their sessions. Many of São Paulo´s smaller and larger Samba schools play CONTEMPORÂNEA instruments.

CONTEMPORÂNEA in Europe

Also in Europe CONTEMPORÂNEA is a popular brand which you sometimes even find in drum- and percussion shops that don´t have so much to do with Samba.

Instruments

CONTEMPORÂNEA has two lines: CONTEMPORÂNEA LIGHT and CONTEMPORÂNEA PRO.

The instruments of the LIGHT line are made of matt aluminium. Kept in a simple design and not being polished, the LIGHT line can be offered at a lower price and without suffering quality loss in terms of sound or durability. The robust PRO line is made of polished aluminium or wood.

Compared to other brands that also use aluminium for building instruments, CONTEMPORÂNEA instruments made from aluminium stand out by being built of thicker material which provides a massive sound to repinique, caixa and surdo, but therefore also a higher weight.
