Buriti - instrument craftsmanship from Portugal
A new delivery of beautiful handmade bumbos made of walnut, oak and iroko laminate has just arrived!
The alfaia (or also: bumbo, bombo de maracatu) is the central instrument in the traditional Maracatu de Baque Virado from Pernambuco. It was popularised throughout Brazil in the early 90s by Chico Science and the Mangue Beat movement. Nowadays, the alfaia is played by percussionists in various popular music styles such as the Mangue, the Funkeado or Embolada. Our alfaias come mainly directly from Recife / Pernambuco, Buriti is a small instrument workshop from Portugal under Brazilian management. All workshops have experienced traditional drum makers and percussionists. Buriti alfaias are made in small series with great attention to detail.
