Musicians used to play the tamborim with nothing but a small stick or, - in percussion ensembles, with their fingers only...! However, the high-tuned instruments that are nowadays played with synthetic beaters in Rios' samba schools, demand a completely different technique and produce a totaly different sound than the traditional tamborim playing!
