Caixa de Maracatu
 | In the brazilian state of Pernambuco an old traditional way of making drums has been revived: instead of tuning the caixa with lugs they use the traditional rope system.
This not only produces a spectacular visual effect but also has the likewise effects on the sound of the drum: since the corpus of the drum is not injured by drill holes nor dampened by the weight of metal parts, the body of the drum vibrates freely and generates an open and cutting sound. Rimshots played on the wooden rim, have a clear but softer sound than on metal rims.
